Weather

Estes Park sits at 7,500 feet above sea level. Our weather can change quickly so please come prepared for all types of weather. While it is not normal, we have had snowflakes while watching the fireworks on 4th of July.

Spring

Springtime in the Rockies can be snowy. Our snowiest months are typically March and April. Spring snows are usually full of water which is perfect for a snowball fight or building a snow fort. As we get into May, the snow gives way to rain. Trail Ridge Road typically opens around Memorial day for the season. The town is usually pretty quiet at this time and is great for a relaxing and peaceful vacation.

Summer

Summer is a very busy time in Estes Park. From Memorial day on, the population of the town swells as families and couples come in from all over the world. Rocky Mountain National Park is a popular destination as the hiking trails go from snow to dirt. Elk and other wildlife are having babies; it is a great time of rejuvenation. At this altitude, there can be warm days but it quickly cools in the evening. Because of the increased traffic in the town, a free shuttle is offered to get you around town. The free shuttle runs from May to October. The Town offers many festivals and fairs for everyone to enjoy. Be sure to make time for the Rooftop Rodeo in July which is part of the Pro-Rodeo circuit. The rain typically tapers off around the end of June beginning of July and the sun comes out for the next 3 months.

Fall

Fall is magical with the leaves changing and the Elk bugling. Weekends continue to be very busy but weekdays are much quieter. There are many days of sunshine however a snow shower is not unheard of. Events to be sure you don’t miss are Elk Fest and the Scottish Highlands Festival.

Winter

Winter in Estes Park is typically cool and snowy. Even though it is cool, winter outdoor sports are still to be had. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing is available on most of the trails throughout Rocky Mountain National Park and the Park offers winter programs as well. The town offers an indoor pool which can be used in any weather, and the elk make their appearance daily around town for your viewing pleasure. Don’t miss the Parade of Lights which takes place the day after Thanksgiving.
